THE DISCO BLUE

The entertainment's manager at the Royal York was Les Meddick. Les's son Clive launched the Island's first discotheque, The Disco Blue in April 1966.

Clive Meddick had been around the London discotheques and clearly had a mess of street savvy. He brought soul music records from London encouraging the DJs at Disco Blue to play them. The Disco Blue opened at the Commodore Cinema on a Wednesday during the first week of April 1966. Island band the Breakers opened the club with the Cherokees and Yakajax on successive nights.

In a bid to challenge the Cherokee's supremacy with their 69 Club, Clive Meddick began booking the first regular spate of mainland acts.
