MAX BRENNAN, PEACEFROG RECORDS, 1997

MAXWELL HOUSE II

This little monster features the talents of Max Brennan on vocals, bass, trumpet, flute, keyboards, synthesisers, percussion, drum proramming and treatments. Paul Butler, guitar, keyboards, drums, percussion and trumpet. Tom Vernon, guitar. Darren Ford, guitar. The cover is by Dave Cheesy Bits.

When Miles Davis meets Frank Zappa who knows what happens.( I will be introducing Mr Brennan to Trout Mask Replica soon ) Well this could be it. The life and times of Mr Brennan and his sit com dance orchestra. Exploring the outer fringes of Cowes and Gurnard.

The guitar playing of Tom Vernon (the Iceman from Bembridge) on In Time With Nine is relaxing and beautiful. Painting colours without brushes. Then there is the King Crimson touch reminding me of Lizard with Mel Collins excellent flute and saxes, plus Nick Evans trombone sound.

The texture of this double album is rich in influences and I can hear several styles in this which sends me up to the loft to search out some of those records I haven't played in ages.

What is puzzling is why Peacefrog the hardcore techno label have this music on in it's portfolio, but I'm not complaining this is a fine selection from Max who lives a stone's throw from my back garden and I will be searching out more of this to play at The Portland.

Tracks: Arena of the Odd, Stuck Up Pilons, Almulantarah, In Time With Nine, Mild Flowers, Finger Movement One, Mid Heaven Express, Tony's Phones, The Odd.
